Finding The Best Way To Clean My White Canvas Shoes
When it comes to shoes, there are few types that are as durable and versatile as canvas sneakers! They have a classic look that works for people of all ages.
Despite canvas’s many advantages, it does have one big drawback โ it shows off dirt, grass stains, and scuff marks plain as day. (This is especially true of white canvas shoes, like my favorite pair of white Keds!)
But lucky for us, dirt on canvas is an easy come, easy go situation. In this post, I’ll show you how to clean canvas shoes so well, they’ll look nearly good as new! :-)
How To Wash Canvas Shoes Safely: Do It By Hand
The safest option for cleaning most types of shoes is to do so gently, and itโs no different for canvas sneakers. Many people choose to wash canvas shoes in the washing machine to save time, but there are risks to going that route.
Cleaning canvas sneakers in your washer can cause discoloration, and weaken the glue that holds the shoes together. So cleaning your shoes by hand may require a bit more of your time and effort, itโs the best way to avoid damaging them.
And as youโll soon see, it really doesnโt even take that much time or effort to clean your shoes by hand. Hereโs how you can do it at home!

How To Clean Canvas Shoes
Youโll need:
- Bucket or sink
- Warm water
- OxiClean
- Scrub brush or toothbrush
- Towel
Directions:
Step 1 – Remove Laces & Insoles
Start by removing the laces from the shoes. Zip them into in a mesh laundry bag and toss them in your washer to clean them.
If your shoes have removable insoles or youโve put a pair into them, remove those from your shoes as well.
Step 2 – Dry Brush, Then Soak
Next, use a scrub brush to brush off any loose dust and dirt from your shoes. Then in a bucket or your sink, mix up a soaking solution of 1/4 cup of OxiClean per gallon of warm water.
Submerge your shoes in the solution and allow them to soak for 30 minutes to two hours, depending on how dirty they are.
Step 3 – Scrub & Rinse
After soaking, use a scrub brush or a toothbrush to scrub away the loosened dirt and grime. Rinse the shoes thoroughly with clean water, then use a dry towel to absorb as much water as you can from the outside and inside of the shoes.
Step 4 – Air Dry
Finally, stuff a bit of newspaper into each shoe to help absorb excess moisture and hold the shape of the shoes while they dry. Set the shoes aside and allow them to dry completely, which could take anywhere from a few hours to a couple of days depending on the humidity.
Once your shoes have dried, relace them and then go show off your fresh and clean kicks! :-)

Off the sneakers topic, but on the original Listerine topic, if anyone has youngsters at school, neat Listerine poured over hair (and over a bowl to be reused) to soak the scalp and left overnight, will eradicate nits.

My mother had to resale shops and I managed them. The secret to getting the above mentioned stains out (and many other stains), is BASIS. It is a very fatty soap. It does not leave a ring and works on most stains. Give it a try.

I love it but, itโs starting to show a little dirt. I mainly have used it as a Summer purse for work. I think itโs because the designated area for everyone to put their purses, lunch bags etc is such a small space. Would this method work for cleaning it?

Please log in or create a free account to comment.I wear white canvas shoes all the time. To clean I remove the shoelaces and put them in a solution of baking soda and hydrogen peroxide and let them soak for 10 min. I rinse my shoes in water first, then make a thin liquid paste of hydrogen peroxide and baking soda. Take a tooth brush to add paste to shoes and lightly scrub. DO NOT RINSE! Then place your shoes outside in the sun, and let dry. Once dry brush off the powder. The sun bleaches the shoes to a brilliant white

Please log in or create a free account to comment. Not to digress, but I had to tell Miss T I am also a BIG believer in the “liquid paste of hydrogen peroxide and baking soda” cleaning method for so many cleaning tasks including canvas shoes. Love the DO NOT RINSE suggestion, sounds very logical Thanks!

Please log in or create a free account to comment.Hi. I’ve always avoided this entire problem by spraying all new shoes/handbags with Kiwi Camp Dry Heavy Duty Water Repellant. Dirt brushes off, and my shoes stay looking new.
I (used to) travel a lot, and I also spray my travel outfit front and lap especially, as I and my fellow travelers sometimes spill, and I always arrive looking clean and fresh. With clothes, you need to reapply after washing…

They came out so bright white (we didn’t have many colors back then). She even made us use the brush on the laces. I still do this with my tennies and canvas shoes.
Our basement recently had water damage and my daughter’s leather boots and shoes got a little moldy. I used a mixture of vinegar and water and washed them off with a rag, then dried them with towel. They came out really nice and the vinegar took the musty smell out. She was very happy.

I have been thinking, (and putting off) cleaning them, for fear of damaging the pictures. If I can work up the steam today, I’ll post a before and after!
Thank you!

I wash my canvas Skechers in the washing machine all the time and air dry them. They come out like new and haven’t had any trouble with shrinkage. I also have put canvas purses in the machine and air dry. Instead of bleach, I’ve been adding White Brite to my machine when washing whites. It works great!
Please log in or create a free account to comment.I love my white canvas Sperryโs and have recently learned to pretreated them with the OxiClean Gel Stick then wash in the machine on delicate. These shoes have leather laces that are knotted on the ends so I didnโt remove them. I also used my finger to make sure I got the gel around the shoelace holes and on the tongue. Dried them out in the sun and they literally look like new.

Great idea. Thank you. I do have a question about your shoes. Did you color them yourself or buy them like that? I did mine with permanent markers and alcohol. Love them.

It’s very strange that you posted this today becasue about an hour ago I got a text from my daughter saying “Hi Mom I accidentally stepped in a mud puddle getting off the bus & one of my Vans has a big mud mark. Can you bring me my high top Converse, pls”
I always use the magic eraser but I used to put them in the washer on the soak setting….and they would look better than when dirty, but they always looked dingy! Ill try this way with her muddy Van!!!
Perfect timing!!! Thanks!!!
